Вега и претходно размислуваше за преземање на највисоката функција во светскиот фудбал. Уште во 2015 година, по суспензијата на тогашниот претседател Сеп Блатер, се обиде да влезе во трката, но не успеа да обезбеди доволно гласови за кандидатура. Подоцна се обиде да се кандидира и во 2019 и 2022 година.
Овојпат, поранешниот фудбалер во објава на 12 страници, која ја сподели на своите профили на социјалните мрежи, официјално ги претстави своите амбиции и планови.
„Не се кандидирам затоа што цел живот барав некаква функција. Се кандидирам затоа што мојата кариера ме подготви да му служам на овој спорт“, порача Вега, објаснувајќи ги своите мотиви и цели.
Во играчката кариера Вега настапуваше за Тотнем, Селтик и Кретеи, а сега сака да се најде на чело на најмоќната фудбалска организација во светот.
На 77. конгрес на ФИФА, кој ќе се одржи на 18 март во Рабат, Мароко, Вега ќе се соочи со актуелниот претседател Џани Инфантино, како и со евентуалните други кандидати. Рокот за поднесување кандидатури истекува на 18 ноември.
